Ever since man came out of the caves he always has craved for greater achievements. Quality management till the early part of the 20^th century was mostly statistical. Dr. Juran added human dimension to it and since then the watchword Total Quality Management (TQM) was born. Dr. Juran is said to have taught the Japanese his principles of the TQM and we all know what Japanese became in the 1970s. They almost wrecked the American Automobile and electronics industry. Till date the Japanese are the strict followers of TQM thanks to Dr. Juran.

Dr. Juran innovated on many theories – for example is extension of the Pareto theory – formed by Vilfredo Federico Damaso Pareto the 19^th century Italian philosopher that 80-20 principle – that 80% of the problems are caused by 20% of the causes. Dr. Juran extended this saying the remaining 80% of the casues are also to be eliminated. Of course this now has turned into one more modern method of management called the Six Sigma.

Anyway to cut the long story short Dr. Joseph Juran passed away on 28.02.08. He was 103 years when he died. Not many live that age – perhaps his commitment to quality made him live that long!

If at all there were giants in the ancient worlds I read somewhere that it could have been due to the high magnetic field that surrounded earth those time and as the time wore by it reduced thereby reducing the size of living beings. There are very tall people among us today but that is abnormality.

Music is the essence of human being’s cultural evolution. There is a scene in Mel Brook’s film A Brief History of World where he portrays how music was born – A cave dweller accidentally drops a stone on another’s leg and he gives a yelp. Flash! The film was supposed to be a comedy – not to be taken seriously – however I found that the idea of music fascinating. Ancient man must have been wondering what to do with his voice which he must have thought only for shouts and grunts and screams. My own pet theory of how music formed part of mankind is that earlier human beings must have started imitating the voices animals and birds – birds especially because that is where the noise is different.

Our country India is famous for two forms of music viz. Hindustani and Carnatic. The word Hindustani may mean to an outsider that the whole country is adopting that style but this is restricted to northern Indian states. And Carnatic music is restricted to four southern states of Karnataka, Andhrapradesh, Kerala and Tamilnadu.

The statement of Mr.Raj Thackray that Mumbai is for Mumbaikars is thouroughly unjustified. There are facts that have to be re-established in the Indian sub-continent today:

1)There is no such place in India called the Republic of Mumbai. Mumbai will remain a proud part of our country,{India- in case we forget}.

2)There should be no room for a civil war in India however hard anybody tries.

3)Partially or wholly seditious statements providing an incitement to violence must be condemned.

Caste wars, water wars, what next? An identity war? This is ridiculous . Aren’t we ever going to aim at achieving our targets at 2020? If we are to, then these statements are not going to do us any good. The constitution clearly states that any Indian can have freedom of movement within this glorious country. When Ambedkar and other visionaries did not have a problem I really don’t know why such statements even crop up.

Thus what people like Mr. Raj Thackray forget is that since 1991 India has become a part of the gobalized world. As Seneca the philosopher once said “I belong to the world” : this should be our motive. So knock knock!! There is a button 'start' but there is no "stop" button. We request you to check this. 4. We find there is 'Run' in the menu. One of my friend clicked 'run ' has ran upto Amritsar! So, we request you to change that to "sit", so that we can click that by sitting. 5. One doubt is that any 're-scooter' available in system? As I find only 're-cycle', but I own a scooter at my home. 6. There is 'Find' button but it is not working properly. My wife lost the door key and we tried a lot for tracing the key with this ' find', but unable to trace. Is it a bug?? 7. India was known for its tolerance. Gone are the good old days. Today we have IAS.IPS officers ,closely following them are these officers called MORAL POLICERS. Not appointed by the central government these self appointed officers are there to protect our culture{protect or abuse?} for those of you who are fairly new to this term, moral policing is nothing but taking the law into your hands for the purpose of protecting our so called culture .They are regulators of our moral behaviour. Who gave them the right is a question we should ask loudly and clearly. These so called regulators are “culture maniacs” for precisely three reasons…

1) They are absolutely not sure what they want.

2) They really don’t know how they are going to achieve what they want.

3) But they do know they are going to save our culture{HOW??}

These moral policers are making a mockery of our culture. We have seen numerous instances of their services to this society. If you think M.F.Hussain needs to be punished for his paintings. what do you do? Resort to violence?. Only a disturbed mind would call violence an answer to most questions. If we belong to a civilized society we should probably go for a legal alternative or even better just ignore the situation. Ignoring is an option arrived after deep contemplation. Simply because if we are strong believers of what we believe in, then nothing could shake our belief even if it is the paintings of Hussain or writings of Salman Rushdie. As for other situations regarding moral policing like protesting against Valentine’s day and so on and so forth , its upto the judiciary which should not entertain any of the mindless cases filed by moral policers. It only adds on to the backlog of already pending cases.

The world is an ever changing place. We are going to see rebellious revolutions, be it culture, education or lifestyle. We have very few choices, the more we protest the more rebellious events turn. As for the moral policers people will keep pushing the limits of their thinking. We either find an astute way out or stop acting like maniacs. As already put forth IGNORING IS A BLISS.

Lessons from January 2008 (Stock markets)

The thing about life is that one makes mistakes. Many mistakes were made in the second half of 2007 and those sins have to be washed away by blood, such is the way of financial markets. Some participants will go down under and never be able to get back to the market again but most will survive. The pain will linger for many months, maybe years but lessons have to be learnt. Every such debacle has lessons for us and the sooner we forget them the more we suffer. The first lesson is not to let stock price performance become the sole reason for buying, a mistake which was made in abundance in the last 3 months. What couldn't be explained by fundamentals was credited to liquidity. The present lost all relevance as people chose to focus on the distant future, perhaps simply because the present could never justify those ticker prices; only a hazy dream of the future could. Traders and investors had no time for fundamental analysts, in many cases they were labelled "cribbing fools". Chartists became the most celebrated tribe on the street as only they could see and predict the one way run to glory for many of the hot stocks even as fundamental watchers cringed at valuations....till the music stopped. Don't get me wrong, charts do work in trending markets but once stock prices veer away completely from fundamental value, people need to get careful. But they never are. Now that the blinkers are off, people should ask themselves why stocks like RNRL, Ispat, RPL, Essar oil and Nagarjuna fertilisers have lost 50-70% of their value. It is simply because their stock prices had snapped all connection with underlying business fundamentals, earnings and value. Their stock prices became the only reasons for buying them which works for a while but not forever. The other big lesson, one which should have been driven in earlier in May 2006, is the danger of overextending oneself in the futures market. The lure of stock futures is easy to understand. Put in some margin, take a big exposure on a fast moving stock, make a killing when prices shoot up. Repeat exercise. Just that people forgot that prices may also come down and at a pace which noone can even imagine, maybe their friendly stockbrokers forgot to tell them that part of the story. The result : unbridled speculation that ran into lakhs of crores, excesses that we are paying for today. Even this fall will not cure investors of their love for futures speculation but if at least some amount of caution is injected it would have been a worthwhile learning. Futures are not toys for amateurs, they are time bombs in the hands of inexpert and inexperienced traders, it's only a matter of when the fuse runs out. The other learning which I hope will play out in the future, as it has in the past, is that it pays to be brave in times of panic such as these. If I was allowed to invest myself , which I am not, I would have no hesitation in deploying serious money into the market today, knowing fully well that prices may fall more tomorrow. And I would be standing there tomorrow to buy more of the same, till my money ran out. India is going to be a terrific stock market story for many years to come, even an intermediate bearish patch cannot shake that conviction of mine. At best, one will have to wait a bit for the returns to follow. That's alright. You are happy to put money in a bank FD and then wait for one full year to collect that measly 8%, aren't you? Then why does the stock market need to give you 20% every month? In the last one year, I haven't seen so many good stocks trade at such mouth watering levels. Forget trading, avoid the duds which were fuelled up by operators, just go out and buy those bluechips. They will deliver, even if there is a global market meltdown for a while, and if you are a bit patient you will be rewarded. But do remember January 2008, as history will repeat itself again in the future. Just that our memories tend to be too short and our greed too much.
