Ever since man came out of the caves he always has craved for greater achievements. His earlier days of his arrival into plains were consumed with the basic survival tactics but as he progressed over the ages and became civilized he started to realize that he needed what is that most important aspect of life – QUALITY. Once he realized he really took off and we are fortunate enough to live in that age of quality and more importantly awareness of the necessity of quality.

In this connection I am reminded of one great name Dr. Joseph M. Juran. Born in 1904, he is fondly called the ‘father’ of quality. Quality management till the early part of the 20^th century was mostly statistical. Dr. Juran added human dimension to it and since then the watchword Total Quality Management (TQM) was born. Dr. Juran is said to have taught the Japanese his principles of the TQM and we all know what Japanese became in the 1970s. They almost wrecked the American Automobile and electronics industry. Till date the Japanese are the strict followers of TQM thanks to Dr. Juran.

Dr. Juran innovated on many theories – for example is extension of the Pareto theory – formed by Vilfredo Federico Damaso Pareto the 19^th century Italian philosopher that 80-20 principle – that 80% of the problems are caused by 20% of the causes. Dr. Juran extended this saying the remaining 80% of the casues are also to be eliminated. Of course this now has turned into one more modern method of management called the Six Sigma.

Anyway to cut the long story short Dr. Joseph Juran passed away on 28.02.08. He was 103 years when he died. Not many live that age – perhaps his commitment to quality made him live that long!

Recession in US

Every day for the past six months, especially ever since the sub-prime crisis started blowing up in July 08 the whole world talks about the recession in the US. Stock markets in the every other country which rose to fantastic heights in the last half of 2008 just fell down like there is not going tomorrow.

There is always a dislike for that great country called the United States of America in many parts of the world mainly nurtured in the early days of communism. So now that the US economy seems to falter many people take joy in it.

Every other day different people there come out with different opinion. If you just follow the Dow headlines one day you will find that the credit worry is receding and the next day Dow falls then the headlines will scream recession is upon.

Has no country seen recession any time in their life time? It is all a cycle. Recession, Depression, Recovery and Bloom in that order is the four famous economic cycles. Every body thinks the worst part is the depression – yes no doubt – but the much more worse part than the depression is the bloom cycle where we through away all caution to the wind – full force manufacture, heavy spending and very little savings. This gradually leads to recession again then the whole cycle repeats. Depending upon the wealth size of the country the cycle may be of few months or years.

I do not know whether the US is in recession cycle or not – but it is my firm belief that if all it has set into a recession then it has got that great resiliency to come out very soon.

Is this all real? I am one of those persons who completely refuse to believe in the existence of such creatures. The entire globe has been scanned by adventurers, warlords travelers and in the modern days there are planes and satellites – not single evidence has come out in favour. Recently I saw a program in the National Geographic called Is it real? It was about a wolf like creature supposed to have been video graphed by an amateur. The program kept on showing a repeated shot of blurred character which could have been anything – a bear – or a tourist or even some fakers. Finally the program ended with no conclusion whatever.

If at all there were giants in the ancient worlds I read somewhere that it could have been due to the high magnetic field that surrounded earth those time and as the time wore by it reduced thereby reducing the size of living beings. There are very tall people among us today but that is abnormality.

Who knows? I only know that it is wistful thinking to indulge in unscientific and unproven so called “facts”
